So what does this mean?
Latest employment start date (LESD) – If your
employee was already in continuous employment with you by the start
of this week or commenced continuous employment with you during these
two dates and is still continuously employed by you she will be entitled
to additional maternity (up 52 weeks) leave plus SMP.
Qualifying week (QW) – If a former employee
was already in continuous employment with you since the LESD (see
below) and left your employment during or after the start of the QW
she will be entitled to SMP.
Earliest start date for maternity leave (EML) –
This is the earliest date from which an employee can choose to commence
her maternity leave.
Compulsory start date for maternity leave (CML) –
Should the employee be absent from work “wholly or partly because
of pregnancy or confinement” on or after this date, she must
commence her maternity leave.
